Apple Butter Morning
Stir a copper kettle of apple butter from the orchard trees over the fire, then take a jar home.
The nine apple trees behind the barn drop more fruit than anyone can eat, so once a year we cook it down. Marisol starts the kettle at nine, and everyone takes a turn at the paddle.
By noon it is dark, thick and ready for biscuits. Every family goes home with a jar. Bring a mug for cider while you stir.
